Using the Alexander Technique at Work - Better Posture
We spend a minimum of 8 hours a day at our place of work. It would therefore make sense to make this place as comfortable and as user friendly as possible. I have been into many companies where staff are sitting in awful chairs, or having their desks arranged in such a poor way that the staff member in question was suffering from headaches and could not see the link between her headaches and what she was doing with her body for hours on end. Many others I have seen slumped in front of their computers, straining their neck, back and shoulders. What we do in those 8 hours a day makes a huge difference to how we are going to feel inside and out. Having your work spaced designed for you is very important and will change your productivity and your mood considerably.

Sitting Posture - for hours at your desk
A number of years ago, I advertised in the newspaper, that I could supply office chairs to those who were unhappy with what they currently had. But, I added in 10 Alexander technique lessons. This stumped most people, as all they wanted was the chair. If your back is used to slouching and suddenly you put your body in a straight back chair, your back will cry in pain. It will be so uncomfortable you will wonder why on earth you bought this ghastly chair. Your back needs to be retrained to be able to sit upright in a straight backed chair. Once it has been retrained then you can go ahead and buy an excellent chair. Ergonomics is an interesting thing, what it really means is that chairs are designed for most people's posture, however, most people have poor posture, so they make the chairs (and lounge suites too) to fit a poor posture, so that you the consumer can continue with your poor posture in their chairs. If you change your posture, then you need a new chair to fit that new posture, and you would want a chair that is much straighter in the upper back.

I could go on like this for hours, but I would suggest that you have a lesson or two and then you will have a much better understanding of what I am talking about. Or have your work place assessed, sometimes minor adjustments can make the world of difference.
